We know that the simple ways to avoid a hangover are to drink in moderation and stay hydrated through the night.
There are those nights though where you just can’t help but get a little more free spirited and keep the drinks flowing! I am all about occasionally letting loose and busting a move on the dance floor!
What do you do though when your night gets a little over the top and getting out of bed in the morning is next to impossible?
There are many hangover cure myths and legends but do they actually work?
I have just the thing to cure that hangover and turn your sleepy day into a productive one!
Morning Chow Down
For some reason everyone believes that you need a greasy breakfast to cure your hangover. False! The grease is just going to feed your sluggishness and leave your stomach doing a few somersaults. You want to eat an easily digestible and healthy breakfast. Your best hangover breakfast would be 2 eggs with 2 slices of toast and a banana. Why? Here’s the breakdown…
Eggs contain something called cysteine. Cysteine acts to clear your body of toxins and will break down the alcohol.
The carbohydrates in bread will help metabolize the alcohol in your body and will get your body feeling less woozy.
After a night of drinking your body is dehydrated and low on potassium and electrolytes. Bananas are rich in both and will help replenish the mineral back in your body. They also help in settling your stomach and metabolizing the alcohol.
Coffee also seems to be a hangover favourite! Most people believe a cup of java will jolt them back to life. In reality, it may actually do just the opposite. Coffee is ok in small to moderate amounts but overdoing it on the caffeine which actually leave you feeling worse. It will contribute to your dehydration and cause headache and fatigue.
In Need of ZZZZ’s
Although the alcohol probably caused you to fall asleep quickly, it most likely didn’t provide a very restful sleep. As the alcohol wears off, your sleep is disrupted. If you can catch some zzz’s in the afternoon, it will help shake the fogginess and restore your body.
Get your Sweat On!
This one is a bit of a toss-up. The biggest benefit in getting a light workout is that it will get your endorphins rushing and help you feel good. You do need to be mindful of staying well hydrated though and sticking to some light steady-state cardio just to get circulation going. It will also help you feel a bit more lively.
Before falling asleep in your drunken stupor, try to down a bottle of water. Since alcohol is a diuretic, your body will be very dehydrated. Keeping water bedside is the best way to start easing off that hangover before morning comes.
Mix me a Cocktail!
Not the one you are thinking of though! My go-to hangover cocktail cure consists of lemon, honey and warm water. It may sound like a strange mix but it will do the trick!
The lemon will help with balancing the body’s blood-sugar and pH levels. This will reduce nausea and dizziness as well as body aches.
Honey is a great source of potassium and a fast-digesting carbohydrate that will aid in metabolizing alcohol.
Warm water helps promote circulation in your body and aids the digestive system.
Try sipping on a glass of warm water with 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 1 tbsp honey first thing in the morning to restore some balance back to your body.
Implement these 6 steps after your next crazy night out and you will tackle the next day like a pro!
