There are two voices of opinion; those who love the colours, taste and whimsical look and those who can’t get over the calories and sugar content!
The funny thing to me is that many of your favourite caffeinated beverages have the same nutritional value but are not scrutinized nearly as much since they look and sound a lot more innocent.
I was recently invited to speak on Daytime TV to discuss this topic and showcase the sugar content hidden in your cup of java.

Here is how I broke it down…
- Large Cinnamon Dolce Latte or Vanilla Latte contains 10 tsp of sugar
- Large Cafe Mocha contains 17.5 tsp of sugar
- Large Hot Chocolate contains 10.5-17.5 tsp of sugar
- Large Iced Cappuccino contains 15 tsp of sugar
- Large Java Chip Frappuccino contains 16 tsp of sugar
….just to name a few popular options
The most important thing to remember is that each pump of syrup that is added to these drinks contains 20 calories and 5g of sugar.
Using simple ingredients you have in your cupboard, you can make your own version of these beverages with a quarter of the calories and close to 0g of sugar.
Sweeten your coffee with a natural alternative like stevia and add ingredients such as cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and cocoa powder to build a delicious coffee without any guilt!
