Spring has arrived and that has us dreaming about hot weather, sunshine, days at the beach and cute outfits!
After a long winter of hibernation though, it can be a little discouraging trying on bikinis, crop tops and mini dresses.
If you are dreading your first strut on the beach this year, don’t fret!
Follow these 3 simple steps and get your beach bod ready in no time!
Step #1 – Cut the Cardio
Yes, I said it….it’s time to cut back on those long, boring cardio sessions. If you are regular gym-goer but not seeing results from all your hard work, it’s time to re-evaluate. Most women I work with come to me spending 45+ minutes on the elliptical or treadmill, finish off with a mini ab routine and wonder why their body is not changing. It’s time to pick-up with weights ladies. Strength training and interval training is where you are going to get the most bang for your buck. Cardio is great for overall health and endurance but is not going to give you drastic changes in the long run. Don’t worry, you are not going to turn into the hulk either. I know when I say weights, you are thinking ‘but I don’t want to get bulky’. You won’t, I promise! Look at starting a strength training routine that has you challenging various muscle groups in ways you never have before. You can also check out some of my workouts below for inspiration:
Step #2 – Adopt a Whole Food Diet
Changing your body does not require cutting calories or whole food groups. We are trained to believe that eating less and cutting things like carbs will equal weight loss… but this is not always the case. If you have ever been on an extreme diet that implemented one or both of those methods, you probably saw rapid weight loss for the first little bit but then hit a plateau or gained it all back once you stopped. This type of weight loss is not all fat loss either, its depleting your muscle mass which is counterproductive. If you want a toned and firm body, muscle is kinda important! You will also cause yourself some metabolic damage and that’s going to make it difficult to continue losing weight or maintain the weight loss. Instead of cutting everything and depriving yourself, simply make better choices. Get rid of anything from a package and stick to whole foods. Food that has just one ingredient – fruits, vegetables lean meats and grains. You will feel a lot less stressed about your diet and most likely see a boost in mood, energy and sleep.
Step #3 – Ensure Proper Nutrition
Along with eating a whole food diet, you want to make sure your body is receiving all the nutrients it requires to perform at its best. If one thing is off, it can be a cause to your lack of results. Eating well is half the battle but we don’t always absorb all the nutrients we need or consume enough of them. If you are feeling low energy, sluggish, constipated, have trouble sleeping or losing weight…..you are not alone! Many women suffer from these types of symptoms and chalk it up to age or hormones. I was once in a place where waking up in the morning was next to impossible even after 8+ hours of sleep. I kept it to myself thinking that I was going through a ‘phase’ and didn’t want to seem like a complainer. However, often times these issues can be corrected through nutrition. (as was the case with me) Be sure to consult with your doctor or naturopath if you feel that something is ‘off’.
